Built around the same time as Stonehenge and only about 2 miles away. The wooden posts also aligned with the summer and winter solstice. The wood deteriorated long ago but archaeologist Maud Cunnington marked the holes with concrete pillars. She also gave the monument its name. Around 4,500 years ago a settlement, Durrington Walls, surrounded Woodhenge. It’s believed that the people who built Stonehenge lived and celebrated midwinter here.





Since Stonehenge and other monuments are nearby, I decided to walk through the National Trust land to see what there was to see.

Fun fact: Stonehenge has the densest concentration of Bronze Age round barrows in Britain.

40 minute direct South Western Railway train from Southampton to Salisbury for £6.20 open return (I have a network railcard)
15 min walk from train station to bus stop M by the Salisbury Market
X4 Larkhill bus for £3 To Durrington (45 min)
To return I took:
activ8 Salisbury bus from Amesbury library for £3 to Salisbury Blue Boar Row (15 min)
